Jacques Benveniste was a French immunologist born in Paris on 12 March 1935. He is best known for his discovery of platelet-activating factor and for a controversial 1988 study on high dilutions of anti-IgE antibody that appeared to support homeopathy, leading to a failed replication and lasting damage to his reputation.

Jacques Benveniste qualified as a physician in 1960 and practiced medicine in Paris before moving into cancer research at the Institute Gustave Roussy. He later worked at the Scripps Clinic in California, returning to France in 1972 to become head of allergy and inflammation immunology at INSERM. In the early 1970s, he discovered platelet-activating factor, the first phospholipid known to have messenger functions, and made significant contributions to understanding its role in inflammatory response. He published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles in immunology and was honored as Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite in 1984 and with the Médaille d’Argent du CNRS in 1985.

In 1988, after more than six years of experiments, Benveniste and colleagues published a paper in Nature describing the action of very high dilutions of anti-IgE antibody on human basophil degranulation, findings that seemed to support homeopathy. Nature attached an editorial reservation and sent a team including John Maddox, James Randi, and Walter Stewart to replicate the results. The team oversaw seven attempts; the first four were somewhat favorable, but stricter double-blind procedures yielded negative results. Benveniste refused to retract, damaging his reputation and forcing him to fund research himself as external funding was withdrawn. In 1997, he founded the company DigiBio to develop applications of what he called Digital Biology.

Benveniste died in 2004 in Paris following heart surgery. His later claims included that water memory could be digitized, transmitted over phone lines, and even over the Internet. Independent tests by the US Department of Defense failed to replicate these effects. Despite the controversy, Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier later took up Benveniste's work on water memory, claiming successful replication.
