Early flying machines cover all aircraft studied or built before the modern aeroplane emerged around 1910. The history of powered flight stretches back more than a century before the first successful manned plane, and the very earliest flying devices date back thousands of years.

Ancient myths from several cultures describe flying devices. The Greek legend of Daedalus, as told by Ovid, involves feathers fastened with thread and wax to mimic bird wings. Hindu mythology includes the Vimana, a flying palace or chariot from the Puranas. The Bible mentions Ezekiel’s Chariot, while Irish legend speaks of the *roth rámach*, built by the blind druid Mug Ruith. Stories of magic carpets appear widely, and the mythical British King Bladud supposedly created flying wings. The Flying Throne of Kay Kāvus, an eagle-propelled craft from Persian legend, was said to carry its rider to China.

Some early attempts at flight involved actual construction. Around 400 BC, according to Aulus Gellius, the Greek philosopher and statesman Archytas of Taranto built a bird-shaped model called The Pigeon, propelled by a jet of steam. It reportedly flew about 200 metres, suspended on a wire or pivot. In the 1st century AD, Chinese Emperor Wang Mang had a scout bound with bird feathers; he is said to have glided roughly 100 metres. In 559 AD, Yuan Huangtou reportedly survived a forced jump from a tower. The Andalusian scientist Abbas ibn Firnas, around the 9th century, covered himself with vulture feathers and attached wings to his arms, gliding some distance before landing with injuries—attributed to his lack of a tail. The historian Lynn Townsend White, Jr. considered this the first successful flight. In the 11th century, the monk Eilmer of Malmesbury attached wings to his hands and feet, flew a short distance, but broke both legs on landing, also having omitted a tail.

Kites originated in China, possibly as early as the 5th century BC, built by Mozi and Lu Ban from silk stretched over split bamboo. Early Chinese kites were flat and often rectangular; later tailless versions used a stabilizing bowline.
