Elisha Gray
American electrical engineer and telephone pioneer.
Elisha Gray was an American electrical engineer born on August 2, 1835, in Barnesville, Ohio, to Christiana (Edgerton) and David Gray. Raised on a farm in a Quaker family, he attended Oberlin College for several years, where he experimented with electrical devices and later taught electricity and science, though he never graduated. In 1862, while at Oberlin, he married Delia Minerva Shepard. Gray’s first patent, granted in 1867, was for a self-adjusting telegraph relay that compensated for varying insulation on telegraph lines—the first of over seventy patents he would receive.
In 1869, Gray partnered with Enos M. Barton to form Gray & Barton Co. in Cleveland, Ohio, supplying telegraph equipment to Western Union. Financing came in 1870 from General Anson Stager, a Western Union superintendent who became an active partner. The company moved to Chicago near Highland Park, and Gray later stepped down as chief engineer to focus on inventing for the telegraph industry. His patent costs were covered by Dr. Samuel S. White, a dentist who made his fortune from porcelain false teeth; White pushed Gray toward the acoustic telegraph, which promised large profits, and away from seemingly less promising projects like the telephone. In 1876, White redirected Gray’s telephone work entirely.
Gray also developed a needle annunciator for hotels and elevators in 1870, and patented an “Improvement in Printing Telegraph Instruments”—a stock-ticker-printer with a typewriter keyboard that printed commodity and stock quotes on paper tape. The Gold & Stock Telegraph Co., based in Western Union’s Manhattan building, leased these machines for $2.50 per commodity per month. According to Western Electric Manufacturing Co., nearly a thousand were in use across the United States and Canada. One such printer resides in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (inventory # 324269), donated by Oberlin College; only two others are known to exist, serial numbers 145 and 287. A photograph shows Gray holding one of these printers, which he called his “Automatic Telegraph Printer.”
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed the city’s telegraph infrastructure, and Gray & Barton was hired to rebuild it. In 1872, Western Union—backed by the Vanderbilts and J. P.
