Johannes Fibiger, a Danish physician and Director of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Copenhagen, discovered Gongylonema neoplasticum in 1907 while dissecting wild rats from Dorpat (now Tartu, Estonia). He found nematodes and their eggs in the rats' stomachs, which also bore tumors, some metastatic. This led him to hypothesize that the nematode caused stomach cancer. After five years of experiments, he published his results in 1913, claiming he had induced cancer through nematode infection. He provisionally named the worm Spiroptera carcinoma in 1914, and with zoologist Hjalmar Ditlevsen formally described it as Spiroptera (Gongylonema) neoplastica that same year. Ditlevsen later revised the name to Gongylonema neoplasticum in 1918.
The nematode's life cycle involves two hosts: rats as definitive hosts and cockroaches (Periplaneta) as intermediate hosts. Adult worms inhabit the epithelium of the rat's anterior digestive tract, including the mouth, tongue, esophagus, and stomach fundus. Eggs are laid in the rat's intestine and excreted in feces, which are then eaten by cockroaches. Inside the cockroach, the embryo develops into a thread-like larva after 4–5 weeks, undergoes molting after three more weeks, and becomes infective to rats that consume the cockroach.
Fibiger's work earned him the 1926 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, but the award was controversial. The Nobel Committee initially considered sharing the prize with Katsusaburo Yamagiwa, but the Karolinska Institute overruled this, making Fibiger the sole laureate. Later research, including studies by Richard Douglas Passey and colleagues, W. Cramer, and Claude R. Hitchcock and E. T. Bell, demonstrated that the tumors Fibiger observed were due to vitamin A deficiency, not the nematode. Erling Norrby, former Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, called the prize 'one of the biggest blunders made by the Karolinska Institute.'
