Vladislav Alexandrovich Ivanov (1936–2007) was a Soviet physicist and engineer who, in 1959, proposed the basic principles of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) decades before the technique was demonstrated by Paul Lauterbur. Despite his early theoretical work, his invention was initially rejected as unrealizable, and he did not commercialize it. He later became a prolific inventor and professor, contributing to Soviet national standards and holding over 100 patents.

Vladislav Ivanov graduated from Leningrad Airforce Academy in 1959. While there, he conceived the idea of using nuclear magnetic resonance for imaging. That same year, he filed his first Invention Certificate application titled 'Free-precession proton microscope,' followed by three more applications. His second application, filed in March 1960, contained a detailed description of MRI principles, as later confirmed. However, it was rejected as 'unrealizable.' An Invention Certificate (№ 1112266) was finally issued in 1984, only after the method had been demonstrated in other countries.
After leaving the military, Ivanov returned to Leningrad and earned a PhD in Engineering from Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University in 1966. He became a lab director at 'Elektroavtomatika' design bureau in 1967, and at D.I. Mendeleyev Institute for Metrology in 1969. He received his habilitation in 1980 and was promoted to professor at ITMO University in 1984.
Ivanov continued as a prolific inventor, with over 100 patents. He developed apparatuses for space, aviation, marine, and underground applications, and was lead designer of two Soviet national standards: of angular velocity and of acceleration. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the International Society of Automation. He wrote over 300 books and articles, including three books of poetry published in 1991, 1997, and 1999.
